Whether you’re new to Reiki for yourself or your pet, these frequently asked questions are here to help you understand the process and prepare for your first session.

Understanding Reiki

How does Reiki work?

Reiki is a complementary relaxation therapy that is traditionally described as working with the body’s energy. It encourages the body into a state of deep relaxation by supporting the nervous system’s natural ability to shift out of stress and into regulation. As the body softens, heart rate and blood pressure may lower, and stress hormones like cortisol may decrease as part of the body’s own self-regulating processes. Reiki also works with the body’s subtle biofield (the natural electrical and magnetic signals produced by the heart, brain, and nervous system) to support a sense of balance and overall well-being.

What does science say about Reiki?

Studies show that Reiki has a positive impact on quality of life. It can reduce stress, anxiety, pain, and improve overall mood; with benefits particularly noted with sufficient session frequency and duration. Many hospitals and wellness centers worldwide offer Reiki as a complementary therapy (such as the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and Yale New Haven Hospital). Sources: Thrane & Cohen (2014), Guo et al. (2024), Liu et al. (2025).

Is Reiki connected to any religious beliefs?

No, Reiki is not connected to any religious beliefs. You don’t need to believe in anything, just breathe and receive.

Are there different types of Reiki?

The original and oldest system of Reiki is the Usui system, which started in Japan. I was trained in Usui/Holy Fire® which integrates the traditional Usui Reiki with some contemporary techniques called Holy Fire. Usui/Holy Fire is known as a gentle, yet powerful and transformative method.

Can Reiki be combined with other treatments?

Yes, Reiki is often used as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical treatments, acupuncture, massage therapy, and other holistic practices. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new treatment.

Does Reiki have any side effects?

Reiki is considered safe with no known side effects. Some people may feel tired or need extra rest after a session, which is usually temporary and part of the body’s natural relaxation response.

Before You Book

How do I prepare for an in-person Reiki session?

  • Before your session:

    • Avoid eating for at least three hours before your session.

    • Dress in comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and wear socks. Minimal jewelry is best. You’ll remain fully clothed during the session, but please remove shoes and anything restrictive.

    • Use the restroom prior to your session so you can fully relax without interruptions.

    • Silence your phone to maintain a calm, undisturbed environment.

  • The day of your session:

    • Steer clear of caffeine, alcohol, processed sugar, drugs, or anything else that can overstimulate the nervous system.

    • Choose clean, nourishing foods. Ideally whole foods plant-based (minimally processed).

    • Stay hydrated throughout the day, both before and after your Reiki session, to support release.

Where do sessions take place?

  • In-person: In a private healing room at a wellness center in Denville, NJ. The address is shared once your session is confirmed. In-home sessions are available for established female clients.

  • Distance Reiki: Via a secure video call, in the comfort of your own space, regardless of where you are.

  • Animal Reiki: In your pet’s home.

How long is each Reiki session?
Sessions typically last 45 to 60 minutes, depending on what comes up during the process and what your body needs that day. Each session unfolds at its own pace. You should allow about 1.5 hours total for both relaxation and integration.

How many Reiki sessions will I need?

The recommended number of sessions varies based on individual needs. Although some feel benefits after a single session, many find that regular, ongoing sessions provide deeper, cumulative healing effects.

What are your rates?

My rates vary depending on the type of Reiki session. You can view all current rates and package deals in the Rates section.

Do you offer gift certificates or packages?

Yes! Reiki makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who could use more relaxation or enjoys wellness practices.

During Your Session

What happens during a Reiki session?

You’ll lie down comfortably, fully clothed. I’ll hover or gently place my hands over specific areas of your body (never private areas). You’ll always have a choice if you prefer no touch.

What will I feel during Reiki?

It’s best not to expect any specific sensation and simply stay present. Most people feel a sense of relaxation; some experience warmth, tingling, muscle twitches, or emotional release. These are normal signs that your nervous system is releasing stored tension. If you don’t feel any of these things, that’s equally normal, Reiki still works beneath awareness.

What if I fall asleep during Reiki?

It’s completely okay if you fall asleep. Some clients prefer staying fully aware of their sensations. While for others, sleep is exactly what the body needs in that moment of restoration.

Virtual / Distance Reiki

What is Distance Reiki?

Distance Reiki allows a session to take place even when we’re not in the same physical space. It works through focused intention, engaging the same relaxation and nervous system responses as an in-person session. Many clients describe it as equally restorative. It can also support emotional healing related to past experiences or younger parts of yourself that still carry unresolved stress.

Is distance Reiki as effective as in-person sessions?

Yes. Most people report the same depth of calm, insight, and release they experience in person. The effectiveness depends less on location and more on your openness to relax and receive.

What technology do I need?

You’ll need a stable internet connection and a device with a camera; ideally a laptop, though a tablet or smartphone works as well. Make sure it's fully charged and/or plugged in. You’ll receive a private Google Meet link for your session. Google Meet is a free, secure video platform.

  • If using a computer: No Google account or payment is required, simply click the link to join.

  • If using a smartphone or tablet: You'll need to download the Google Meet app in advance. Avoid any prompts to start a “premium” or paid trial.

How do I prepare for distance Reiki?

Find a quiet, comfortable space where you can lie down without interruptions. Have a blanket nearby if you get cold. The session lasts up to an hour. Ensure the room is well-lit so I can see you clearly during the video session. Remove distractions, and feel free to light a candle, burn incense, or use an oil diffuser. Set an intention for what you’d like to receive, and I’ll guide you through the process.

Reiki for Animals

How does Reiki work on animals?

Animals intuitively sense energy. Just like with humans, Reiki can help calm their nervous system and improve their overall well-being.

Which animals do you work with?

I work with all animals. Please disclose if there are any aggression concerns in advance.

How do you give Reiki to animals?

As with humans, I place or hover my hands over specific areas of the animal’s body. Because animals are highly sensitive to energy, they may sometimes choose to create distance as they sense their own energy shift. This is completely normal; in those cases, I continue the session from a short distance. Each session is tailored to the animal’s comfort and needs.

How long should an animal receive Reiki?

Typically, Reiki sessions for animals last a maximum of 30 minutes. The frequency and duration depend on the animal's specific needs.

How should I prepare my pet for a session?

Choose a calm area with a comfortable spot for them to lie on if they want to, without distraction. No need to restrain them; animals naturally engage as they wish.
